Always On: Understanding the Intrinsic Motivations for Playing Games on Smartphones and the Effect of User Characteristics

    Get PDF
This study examines the intrinsic motivations that drive the enjoyment of smartphone games and the influence of the characteristics of age, gender and playfulness on such motivations. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) from the discipline of psychology as a basis, a sample of 340 smartphone gamers was surveyed and the results were analyzed using a multiple linear regression approach. The consequent model was then tested in relation to two specific games to further validate the approach and provide a model that is relevant to individual games. This study thus provides a clearer idea of the nature of play as it develops in the era of the smartphone game as well as adding another layer to our understanding of intrinsic motivation due to the fact that smartphone games can be accessed as necessary for need satisfaction, to experience flow, to gain a sense of escapism and ultimately to allow a player to experience a sense of enjoyment. Given that smartphones now constitute an essential communication device, this represents a key change in that people can now access a mode of play almost at whim. Players now have access to an enjoyable experience that can provide satisfactions that other experiences in their daily life may not allow

Harmonic analysis and mitigation in distribution grids with high penetration of power inverters

    Get PDF
Inverters of large heat pumps in an urban low voltage grid generate current harmonics and cause consequently significant variations of the respective voltage harmonics. The voltage level at each grid point is not only influenced by the operation of such inverters, but higher harmonic voltage amplitudes can be expected, caused by the sum of all loads in the grid. The paper provides a comprehensive harmonic analysis of a typical urban distribution grid including heat pumps and presents insights on the variations and impact on the voltage profile of the 15th harmonic currents. An active harmonic filter was installed to enhance the power quality, by compensating the harmonic currents and by improving the voltage profile at grid points close-by the heat pumps

Autojammin' - Designing progression in traffic and music

    Get PDF
Since the early days of automotive entertainment, music has played a crucial role in establishing pleasurable driving experiences. Future autonomous driving technologies will relieve the driver from the responsibility of driving and will allow for more interactive types of non-driving activities. However, there is a lack of research on how the liberation from the driving task will impact in-car music experiences. In this paper we present AutoJam, an interactive music application designed to explore the potential of (semi-) autonomous driving. We describe how the AutoJam prototype capitalizes on the context of the driving situation as structural features of the interactive music system. We report on a simulator pilot study and discuss participantsā€™ driving experience with AutoJam in traffic. By proposing design implications that help to re- connect music entertainment with the driving experience of the future, we contribute to the design space for autonomous driving experiences

The personality traits activity, self-reproach, and negative affect jointly predict clinical recurrence, depressive symptoms, and low quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

BACKGROUND The bidirectional "gut-brain axis" has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). While the influence of stress and depressive symptoms on IBD is well-characterized, the role of personality remains insufficiently investigated. METHODS Personality was assessed in 1154 Swiss IBD cohort study (SIBDCS) patients via the NEO-Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) as well as in 2600 participants of the population-based CoLausĀ¦PsyCoLaus cohort study (NEO-FFI-revised). The NEO-FFI subcomponents activity, self-reproach and negative affect were associated with higher IBD disease activity and were combined to a NEO-FFI risk score. This risk score was validated and its effect on clinical IBD course and psychological endpoints was analysed in time-to-event and cumulative incidence analyses. RESULTS In time-to-event analyses, a high NEO-FFI risk score was predictive for the clinical endpoints of new extraintestinal manifestation [EIM, adjusted hazard ratio (aHR)ā€‰=ā€‰1.64, corrected p value (q)ā€‰=ā€‰0.036] and two established composite flare endpoints (aHRā€‰=ā€‰1.53-1.63, qā€‰=ā€‰0.003-0.006) as well as for the psychological endpoints depressive symptoms (aHRā€‰=ā€‰7.06, qā€‰<ā€‰0.001) and low quality of life (aHRā€‰=ā€‰3.06, qā€‰<ā€‰0.001). Furthermore, cumulative incidence analyses showed that patients at high NEO-FFI risk experienced significantly more episodes of active disease, new EIMs, one of the flare endpoints, depressive episodes and low disease-related quality of life. Personalities of IBD patients showed only minor differences from the general population sample (Pearson's rā€‰=ā€‰0.03-0.14). CONCLUSIONS Personality assessed by the NEO-FFI contained considerable predictive power for disease recurrence, depressive symptoms and low quality of life in IBD patients. Nevertheless, the personalities of IBD patients did not substantially differ from the general population

Human-Computer Integration (HInt) is an emerging paradigm in which computational and human systems are closely interwoven. Integrating computers with the human body is not new. However, we believe that with rapid technological advancements, increasing real-world deployments, and growing ethical and societal implications, it is critical to identify an agenda for future research. We present a set of challenges for HInt research, formulated over the course of a five-day workshop consisting of 29 experts who have designed, deployed, and studied HInt systems. This agenda aims to guide researchers in a structured way towards a more coordinated and conscientious future of human-computer integration

Current guidelines and literature on screening for coronary artery calcium for cardiac risk assessment are reviewed for both general and special populations. It is shown that for both general and special populations a zero score excludes most clinically relevant coronary artery disease. The importance of standardization of coronary artery calcium measurements by multi-detector CT is discussed
